Abby is not just a phenomenal DJ, she is a wonderful teacher who is super patient and generous with her encouragement. Beyond breaking down the basics, she shows, with her own rich experience, how DJ-ing is beyond techniques but also expressing your own character and commanding the room. The way she encourages me to experiment with sounds that I like dancing with makes learning much more fun!

FAQ

HOW HARD IS IT TO START DJING?
I remember how fresh and exciting it was when I started to learn how to DJ. It's not too hard to get started, but it does take practice to get good. It’s all about having fun and trying new things. Don't be afraid to make mistakes - that's how you learn!

WHAT EQUIPMENT DO I NEED TO
GET STARTED?
At the start, you can practice DJing with just headphones. As you progress and want to explore more advanced techniques, you'll need additional equipment such as a DJ controller, speakers, and music. Choose equipment based on your budget, skill level, and intended use. Start with the basics and gradually build up your equipment as you improve your skills.

WHY LEARN FROM JUST BEE?
Learning DJing can be an intimidating process – I’ve been there myself! There are so many videos and resources online that make it overwhelming to know where to start. Having DJed for over 8 years in hundreds of different scenarios, I offer reliable guidance and support to help you develop your skills and overcome any self-doubt or nerves.

The goal is to not only learn the technical aspects of DJing, but also to build your self-confidence and discover your own style. Whether you're a complete beginner or looking to take your skills to the next level, I’ll mentor you through the learning process, so that you can become the best DJ you can be.

DO I NEED TO KNOW HOW TO PLAY AN INSTRUMENT?
Don’t worry if you can’t play an instrument or don’t have a musical background, anyone can learn how to DJ. All you need is a passion for music and a willingness to learn.

WHAT ARE SOME COMMON MISTAKES TO AVOID AS A BEGINNER DJ?
OVERUSING EFFECTS
While effects can be a fun and creative tool, using too many can be distracting and overwhelming for the listener. Instead, use effects sparingly and purposefully to enhance the music. Try limiting yourself to one or two effects per mix.

MIXING OUT OF PHRASE
mixing out of phrase can be jarring and disrupt the flow of the music. To avoid this, it's important to understand the structure of the music you're playing. Most modern dance music follows a 4/4 signature, with each phrase consisting of four bars (each bar containing four beats). To create a smooth mix, aim to start the next track at the beginning of a new phrase. Look for cues such as changes in the elements of the song or a breakdown to help you identify the start of a new phrase.

WILL I LEARN HOW TO MAKE MY OWN MUSIC?
No – music production and DJing are two different ways of working with music. Music production is about creating original music, which could involve writing lyrics, composing melodies or recording vocals. DJing is about using existing music tracks and blending them together to create a seamless, continuous mix. The focus is on selecting and presenting music in a creative way, rather than creating it from scratch.
