I remember how fresh and exciting it was when I started to learn how to DJ. It's not too hard to get started, but it does take practice to get good. It’s all about having fun and trying new things. Don't be afraid to make mistakes - that's how you learn!
-
At the start, you can practice DJing with just headphones. As you progress and want to explore more advanced techniques, you'll need additional equipment such as a DJ controller, speakers, and music. Choose equipment based on your budget, skill level, and intended use. Start with the basics and gradually build up your equipment as you improve your skills.

Beatmatching is when a DJ makes two songs play at the same speed and rhythm so they sound like one song. It's an important skill to have as a DJ because it helps create smooth and seamless transitions between songs.

Overusing effects – While effects can be a fun and creative tool, using too many can be distracting and overwhelming for the listener. Instead, use effects sparingly and purposefully to enhance the music. Try limiting yourself to one or two effects per mix.
Mixing out of phrase – mixing out of phrase can be jarring and disrupt the flow of the music. To avoid this, it's important to understand the structure of the music you're playing. Most modern dance music follows a 4/4 signature, with each phrase consisting of four bars (each bar containing four beats). To create a smooth mix, aim to start the next track at the beginning of a new phrase. Look for cues such as changes in the elements of the song or a breakdown to help you identify the start of a new phrase.

Don’t worry if you can’t play an instrument or don’t have a musical background, anyone can learn how to DJ. All you need is a passion for music and a willingness to learn.

No – music production and DJing are two different ways of working with music. Music production is about creating original music, which could involve writing lyrics, composing melodies or recording vocals. DJing is about using existing music tracks and blending them together to create a seamless, continuous mix. The focus is on selecting and presenting music in a creative way, rather than creating it from scratch.
